Guitar Hero DLC draws to a close

Activision puts rhythm franchise "on vacation until further notice" with this week's launch of April track packs.

In February, Activision pulled the plug on its Guitar Hero franchise, saying it would no longer release downloadable content for the rhythm game franchise after month's end. However, the company quickly backtracked on that proclamation, giving the series a temporary reprieve to thank fans for their continued support of the Hero games.

That reprieve lasted less than two months, as Activision social media manager Dan Amrich this week confirmed on the PlayStation Blog that the franchise had officially begun its hiatus.

"With the release of April's downloadable Track Packs, Guitar Hero as a franchise goes on vacation until further notice," Amrich wrote. "Some are sad to see it go, others happy--but of course, the music lives on. Those games and guitars are in your collection, and it's easy enough to fire them up whenever you want to feel like a guitar hero. Long live rock."

While it's unclear how long the vacation Amrich referred to will last, the Guitar Hero series likely isn't going away forever. Earlier this week, Activision VP of developer relations and acquisitions Dan Winters went on the record saying the series isn't being canceled, "We're just not making a new one for next year; that's all."
