EA trumpets franchise-best seven-day sales for Augusta National-set, Masters-themed golf simulation; digital revenue up 200%.
Electronic Arts scored a coup for its latest edition of Tiger Woods PGA Tour, landing the rights to re-create the famous Augusta National golf course in a game devoted to its signature event, The Masters. As it would turn out, opening up that exclusive club, even in a digitized way, has caught the eye of many a golf gamer, as EA announced today record first-week sales for the Tiger Woods franchise. Going off EA's internal estimates, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters sold to consumers about 225,000 units in North America during the seven days following its March 29 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii. That figure trumps previous record holder Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08, which was released in 2007, by 17 percent. Those increased sales have equated to a boon in digital revenue, as well. According to EA, virtual goods sales are up 200 percent over last year. EA also found success with the digital editions of the game released through Apple's App Store, as the iPhone and iPad versions of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 were the top-grossing apps on iTunes through its launch week. Additionally, EA released a handful of marshmallow stats for the latest Tiger Woods. Thus far, more than 7 million games have been played, and console gamers have racked up online play time that equals 2,515 PGA Tour seasons. More than 184 million shots have been taken.
